- The members of the mainstream press are idiots: From the beginning of this campaign, let’s call it the afternoon of September 11, Bush has been warning the American people that this will be a long campaign that will require sacrifices and troops on the ground. No doubt about it. It will not take weeks or months, but years. Cheney has gone to even greater lengths to indicate that this will be the struggle of our lifetimes. Tony Blair has made it clear from the start that this will be an incredibly complex operation that will take years. All the members of his military and foreign relations team (like their counterparts in the U.S.) have concurred with this assessment.
The key questions to emerge in the press over the last several days: Why is this taking so long? Why isn’t working? Is this another Vietnam quagmire?
It’s been three weeks.
- Rudy Giuliani deserves to be Washington, and Washington deserves to have Giuliani. (Take that for what you will.)
- One who does evil: An evil-doer (there will be a quiz).
- When it comes to military matters, there is one person who speaks for the Bush administration. That is Donald Rumsfeld who will hold one tightly organized press briefing a day.
- When it comes to homeland security, there is only one person who speaks for the administration, sorta. His name is Tom Ridge. His name is also Tommy Thompson, Robert Mueller, Norman Mineta, Paul O’Neill, Andy Card, George W. Bush, and depending on the outcome of the World Series, Don Zimmer.
- There will be one press conference a day to calmly update the American people on anthrax and other security threats and issues. Except in cases when there are 15 a day. Please take necessary precautions, but don’t panic.
